String Functions

String functions are commonly used for interpreting and manipulating text fields.

Concatenate

DescriptionJoins several text strings into one text string.
RemarkThe “&” operator can be used instead of Concatenate() to join strings
ExampleConcatenate("This ","is ","one ","string!") – returns This is one string!
"This " & "is " & "another " & "string!" – returns This is another string!

Left

DescriptionReturns the first character(s) of a text string.
RemarkThe first argument is the string you want to display. The second argument is number of characters you want.
ExampleEx. Left(“example”, 2 ) – returns ex.

Len

DescriptionReturns the number of characters in a text string.
ExampleEx. Len(“example” ) – returns 7.

Lower

DescriptionConverts all uppercase letters in a text string to lowercase.
ExampleEx. Lower(“EXAMPLE” ) – returns example.

Mid

DescriptionReturns a specific number of characters from a text string starting where you specify.
RemarkMid takes three input arguments:
1. The text string.2. The place you want to start.3. The number of characters you want to display.
ExampleEx. Mid(“example” , 2, 3) – returns xam.

NewLine

DescriptionBegins a new line of text.
RemarkNewLine takes no arguments.
ExampleEx. NewLine()

Replace

DescriptionReplaces part of a text string.
RemarkReplace takes four input arguments:
1. The text string to partially replaced.
2. The place you want to start replacing.
3. The number of characters to replace.
4. The string you want to substitute.
ExampleEx. Replace(“example”, 2, 3, “*”) – returns e*ple.
DescriptionReturns the last characters in a text string.
RemarkThe first argument is the string you want to display. The second argument is number of characters you want.
ExampleEx. Right(“example”, 2) – returns le.

Trim

DescriptionRemoves all spaces from text except for single spaces between words.
ExampleEx. Trim(“This     sentence     has   weird    spacing.”, 2) – returns This sentence has weird spacing.

Upper

DescriptionConverts text to uppercase.
ExampleEx. Upper(“example”) – returns EXAMPLE.

Value

DescriptionConverts a text string that represents a number to a number.
ExampleEx. Value(“$1,000”) – returns 1000.
