Top 10 Exago Support Labs of 2017

by | Dashboards & Data Viz, Deploying BI, Reporting

The Exago Support Lab series has been a hit since its genesis in Fall of 2016, when we realized our old three-hour trainings were losing steam and decided to replace them with a series of short, workshop-style webinars. Client enthusiasm for this change has been nothing if not effusive.

So, with more than twenty videos on everything from report styling to multi-tenanting, we decided to see what Exago BI users have been watching most. Below are our top ten Support Labs of last year by the number of minutes watched. Give them a skim! Maybe you’ll learn something new or find a solution to a problem you’ve been pondering.

#10: Custom Functions

Custom functions are one of the pillars of Exago BI’s extensibility. Don’t see a function your users need for their formulas? We’ve made it possible for you to build it yourself!
In this lab, BI Consultant Nick Cortina walks through the process of building three custom functions. The first retrieves a report’s export type, the second loads company logos dynamically from a file system, and the third pings an external API for tax rate information.

#9: Setting Date, DateTime, and Currency Formats

Data formatting can be applied at both local and global levels. In this lab, Sales Engineer Emma Williams walks through three different ways to format date, datetime, and currency values: using column metadata, using culture settings, and using the format cells menu.

#8: Chart Data Layout Types

Advanced reports give users the option to select one of three chart data layout types. These layouts allow for more fine-tuned control over how the data is displayed. Emma makes the same chart using three different data setups in order to illustrate how each layout works!

#7: Advanced Charting Attributes

Exago BI’s charts come with a whole slew of special features specific to each chart type. Nick explains how to apply advanced charting features and demonstrates how to enhance one of those attributes using action events, another pillar of Exago’s extensibility.

#6: Multi-Series, Multi-Axis, and Combination Charts

Perhaps by now you’ve noticed a theme. Charting is a hot topic for Exago users, and with the advent of these new chart types, it was imperative that we do a lab. Emma demonstrates the differences between multi-series, multi-axis, and combination charts, explaining when to use each.

#5: Server Events

Server events are another fundamental aspect of Exago’s extensibility. Admins can use them to customize the application’s running state at specified times, such as when a report is being executed or scheduled. Evan Clark, Exago’s Support Team Lead, gives an introduction to server events, using the ShowSQL server event and the execution logging server event as examples.

#4: Custom Columns and Static Crosstabs

Crosstab Reports, similar to Excel’s Pivot Tables, dynamically expand data fields to create column and row headers from the discrete values making up those fields. This usually done programmatically using the Crosstab Designer, but it can also be done manually in Advanced Reports. Manual or “static” crosstabs have their advantages, though, as Emma demonstrates in this lab.

#3: Roles

Emma discusses the what, when, and why of Roles, the method by which Exago BI admins restrict user access to folders and objects, as well as override general settings. This is mostly a broad overview, but there is some attention to diagnosing error messages and working through corner cases.

#2: Multi-Tenanting

Tenanting, our runner-up topic, plays a crucial role in data management and security. Exago Senior Manager of Client Services Travis McGrath covers four methods of setting up the application for multi-tenant environments, including tenanting based on column, schema, database, and custom SQL objects.

#1: Splitting a Field into Two Groups

Our winner for most-watched support lab is also the first support lab ever recorded! Inspired by a support ticket, this lab explains how to split a field into binary groups. Emma walks through three different means of accomplishing this: using collated chained reports, using repeating groups, and using conditional formatting.
