Infographic Text: 5 Tips for Reporting Off Live Data
In general, live, transactional data will take longer to process for reporting.
If analyzing warehoused data is akin to buying a cake from a bakery display case, analyzing live data is like having a cake made to order.
But in industries where even minutes-old information can compromise decision making, live data is the only data.
Thankfully, there are ways to have your cake and eat it too.
Return only the records you need. Use filtering and record limits to save time returning the necessary data. Don’t build a twelve-tier cake when a two-tier cake will do.
Design reports using cached data. There’s no need to tax your system if you can use cached data to fine-tune formulas and formats. Sketch your cake design; save the ingredients for baking day.
Schedule reports for delivery. If you know you’re going to need a fresh cake on Tuesday at 2 PM, call ahead. You get all the freshness and none of the wait time.
Use pre-processed data whenever possible. Views, stored procedures, and other programmatic data sources can help bridge the processing gap. It’s like decorating with premade fondant instead of making your own.
Use efficient join pathing. Don’t use a five-object data model when a two-object model will do. Unnecessarily fancy ingredients do not a better cake make.
